The broad topic of Deep time insights into Major Evolutionary Transitions will include invited talks from a diverse range of researchers at different career stages to showcase a breadth of major transitional events occurring over billions of years.

Icebreaker

The Icebreaker will take place on the evening of Tuesday 8th December, following the Symposium, in the spectacular setting of the Museum of Natural History, University of Oxford.
This special event offers delegates the opportunity to explore the newest permanent exhibits unveiled in 2026. These displays trace the evolving relationships between life and our planet, while showcasing Oxfordshire’s internationally renowned geological and palaeontological heritage. The displays feature type material of dinosaurs such as the famous Megalosaurus, the first dinosaur to be scientifically named and described in the world, reimagined in dynamic new poses. Alongside rock, fossil, and mineral specimens are specially commissioned artworksthat bring these extraordinary prehistoric worlds vividly to life, and a series of revamped touchable specimens.
Delegates will also have the opportunity to visit the temporary exhibition 34: The critical raw materials shaping our future. Critical raw materials are fundamental to modern technology, yet their future supply presents major scientific, environmental and geopolitical challenges. This thought-provoking exhibition explores how researchers are developing innovative solutions to secure these vital resources sustainably and ethically.
Attendance at the Icebreaker is included in the registration fee and will include two drink vouchers. Delegates wishing to attend the Icebreaker should register their attendance at the time of online registration, when they will also be able to specify their drink preferences (beer / wine / soft drinks).
